Justice serve Justin Bieber cease-and-desist alleging trademark infringement

French electro band Justice have invoked legal action against Justin Bieber. The Canadian pop star was recently served a cease-and-desist letter alleging that the artwork for Bieber’s latest album, Justice, infringed on Justice’s trademarked logo. Justice’s management released a statement earlier in March that Bieber’s team had originally reached out about designing a logo but had never heard back after attempting to set up a call.

According to the letter, the artwork for Bieber’s latest LP violates a trademark filed throughout the European Union in 2014 regarding a visual “cross” in Justice’s logo. In addition to the album artwork, Justice’s lawyers have also taken aim at merchandise and clothing surrounding Bieber’s latest release. The cease-and-desist states,

“Not only was Bieber’s team actually aware of Justice’s use of the [cross], they sought to use the same artist who essentially duplicate it for the Album. This is textbook bad faith and willful infringement.”

Although the letter, sent March 10, claimed Bieber’s use of the logo to be illegal, the singer’s sixth album was nonetheless released around the world on March 19. Bieber’s legal team has yet to comment on the situation, but according to Justice’s management, the cease-and-desist letter was “rejected” on the grounds that the band’s trademark was not infringed on.
